ABOUT
Vanessa Mahy
Where it all started ……

I think I have always had a passion for making and designing cakes. Although I must admit my first bakes weren’t very successful! But with the help of my wonderfully creative sister, I soon got the hang of it, and I haven’t looked back.

Initially, I started making personalised miniature fruit cakes, which I supplied to local businesses, and I also sold and posted out directly to clients. I soon started to get requests for more detailed and elaborate designs and so my cakes grew bigger and more spectacular.

I’m a bit of a multitasker, so while I continued to make and design cakes, I worked part-time in HR. A wedding and family followed, and I now have two wonderful children, who are pretty much grown up! In 2014 I left my HR role and started making cakes full-time. I have continued to grow my business since, and I now have a large number of loyal clientele. It’s lovely to hear from couples who I made their wedding cake for, and then being asked to make their children’s christening and birthday cakes.

I love challenging myself, and there are always new techniques and skills to learn, which I can then incorporate into my designs. So, when a client calls and asks for a certain cake design that I haven’t made before it gives me a sense of excitement. I love creating something new, whether it’s modelling work, sugar flowers or a painting, I know I am going to be making something special.

I have also worked on collaborations with other talented cake designers for exhibitions and displays. When I have time, I love to enter competitions and I have won a few gold awards along the way. Most recently coming second in my class at Cake International 2021 for a shoe and handbag design.
And now …….

For many years I traded as My Little Shop of Cakes, but times move on and I have gone through a little re branding. It’s still me, baking and designing wonderful cakes for you, but I am now working under my name
Vanessa Mahy Cake Design

I have thought about specialising in just wedding cakes, but then I would miss out on all those incredible creations I have made from cars, to dogs and handbags!

I love my job and wouldn’t want to do anything else, and I hope that this passion is passed on through my work.
